The Initiatic Well in the gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira (Sintra, Portugal) is actually a 27m subterranean tower. One enters from a tunnel deep in the earth and climbs the twisting stairs to heaven.
“This hallowed space, full of esoteric and alchemical associations, makes the relation between Heaven and Earth intensely felt.”

Wow, I love this portrayal! It really does feel like you could walk right up to heaven!

God. This reminds me of the exit out of the Catacombs in Paris…was hardest walking day I’d ever done and then came upon steps like this. Guy at the top working for Catacombs actually gave me his seat I looked so bad when I managed all these! Great pic!

While it’s technically an underground tower, the word ‘Well’ is apt. Water drips from the ceiling constantly and the steps are literally running with water. A challenging climb. And we arrived at the top more than slightly damp.
