It’s [insert favourite superhero here]!
Superheroes are all the rage at the moment, have you noticed?
Marvel is raking in the millions with movie franchises based on individuals (Captain America, Iron-man, Spiderman, Thor) and ensembles (The Avengers) while their television shows (Agent Carter, Agents of Shield, Daredevil) draw millions of viewers.
DC Comics isn’t doing so well on the movie front these days (Batman vs Superman) but the television DC world is thriving (Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl).
For a geeky household like ours, this growing popularity of geek culture is very welcome. Superheroes everywhere! (Why else would I have a caped crusader for an avatar? Even if it is an un-Masterly one.)
But superheroes don’t just live in comic books and on the silver screen. They are all around us. Sure, they may not fly or have superhuman strength or even possess the coolest toys but I’ll bet you know one.
It’s the friend who has endured overwhelmingly difficult life challenges but still smiles and offers her gifts and talents for the enjoyment of others.
It’s the one who has suffered unimaginable loss but has learned to love and laugh again.
It’s the friend who despite financial struggles continues to give generously to others.
It’s the one who chooses to follow her heart and with courage step out to start a business, move to another country, launch a new career or begin a new life on her own.
It’s the friend who fights and defeats a serious illness.
It’s the one who makes you believe you can do anything.
Superheroes are all around us, quietly going about their lives often oblivious to the inspiration they are to the rest of us. They don’t have magical powers or a fancy suit or a cape but they are our real heroes.
I recently chose to acknowledge one of the superheroes in my life by making her a cape for her birthday. I think all the heroes who work magic in our lives should have a cape. Sorry Edna.
Who are the superheroes in your life?
Very very true, they are all around us 🙂

They certainly are.

So very true. We never need to look very far to find a superhero!

Making the cape, which started out as a bit of silliness, got me thinking about it and that’s what I realised too.

I always though my grandmother was a bit of a superhero, although she was less than five foot tall and left school when she was eleven.

Most superheroes have come from difficult origins and they aren’t always physically the type you’d expect to be one so your grandmother sounds like the perfect superhero to me.

My superhero is a colleague of mine who battled with cancer for over a year, who scheduled her chemos on Fridays so she would be sick on weekends and still be able to teach again on Mondays so her students wouldn’t leg behind. Since she was a single mom and her ex was out of the picture, another motivation to keep working was that she wouldn’t be short on money and she therefore could still do fun stuff with her 2 kids.
Maybe she wasn’t able to fly, but she was definitely able to make you think really hard and command awe and respect.

And that is exactly what this post is about. Your colleague sounds amazing and definitely a superhero.

You are so right! so many super people doing unbelievably heroic things day to day. I will be imagining them all wearing capes from now on.

I think that’s a great idea, Sue! I think we notice people like that and admire them but it’s good to really think to ourselves, “that’s way beyond the normal”. Picturing them in a superhero cape is a good way to be reminded. 🙂

It would be fun to go around handing out real capes to people every day. Yes I would like that job!

I love Edna!! .. and I love that movie.
… while I agree that a cape doesn’t make a superhero, I think it is very touching symbolism to make and give someone special a cape. It sounds like you are also a superhero 🙂

Edna’s the best! Every time I see her, my first reaction is to say “No capes!” 😀
Thanks, Joanne. ❤

This was such a nice little read, definitely something we need to consider more often than we do with so many super heroes around us.
For me its got to be my great Aunt having battled with so much loss in her life but managing to push through it and keep going with her small business and show endless love for her grand children 🙂

We’re totally caught up in superheroes of the comic variety in this house but it occurred to me through the making of the cape that there are even more impressive heroes in my life. Sounds like you have one in your great Aunt. Thanks for your comment. 🙂

So true, Mosy. Superheroes are all around us. They are the everyday people with a big heart. Superheroes are you and me 😀 One of my superheroes is my stuffed monkey Mr Wobbles. No matter how dark and grey a day may be, he is always there with a smile. He even smiles when he hasn’t slept in two days. Sounds like your household is delighted at so many comic book movies on screen over the last few years 🙂

Hooray for Mr Wobbles! He sounds like a handy superhero to have around. 🙂
We are always anxiously awaiting the release of the latest (usually Marvel) movie. At the moment it’s Captain America: Civil War we’re waiting on. And there’s also excitement at news such as the filming of a second Deadpool movie. And there’s so much geeky tv now, we can’t keep up. We’re weeks behind on some of them! (That can get tricky with the DC ones because they love a “cross-over” episode so you kind of need to watch all of them in screening order.) Yep, we’re a little bit passionate about comic books on the screen…. can you tell? 😉

It sounds like your family has enough to keep themselves occupied whenever you are stuck at home, or have nothing to do on the school holidays 😀

It’s the special friend who is always there to listen, hold your hand and care but never expects anything in return and is surprised when I tell her how amazing she is. There are many people in the world like my friend, and they definitely deserve their Superhero status. Lovely post, Mosy!

I agree whole heartedly! Real superheroes in our lives don’t get any press and certainly don’t get a movie. I have several friends who are battling illness with love, hope and compassion for themselves and their families. It’s amazing. It’s super heroic.

It truly is. The human spirit really is a super power, although some seem to possess it in greater quantities than others. Best wishes to your friends.

Yes, I guess we are all superheroes in some way at some time but there are certainly some in my life that are true heroes to me.

My mother was a superhero, coping with five children and always helping others less fortunate. Love your post, Heather! I hope your friend makes you a cape too!

“…Marvel is raking in the millions with movie franchises…”
That doesn’t just magically happen. Consumers actually buy Marvel’s sycophantola.

Yeah, that’s why the post started with “Superheroes are all the rage at the moment”. I meant “with people” but I thought that was a given. With three teenage boys in the house, we’re happily members of that sycophantola (good word). It’s all just good fun. The ones who make me laugh are the Comic Book Nazis who rabidly declare they’re done with a tv show because the writers have done something that isn’t “canon” (mind you they always seem to pop up again to criticise the next episode). Mate, it’s a television show about not real people, it’s not a documentary. People mess with Shakespeare’s works all the time. Just enjoy the ride.
Thanks for your comment!

I know a few humans that deserve a cape, more so than Batman or Superman. You are right, there are super people all around us!

In my personal opinion, in light of the most recent movie, I think Batman and Superman should both have their capes confiscated and donated to more worthy recipients.

I refuse to watch the movie. Have you seen it? I see it as wrong. Really wrong.

You’ll get no disagreement from this family. In fact we were just discussing it over dinner tonight. As the Middle Son pointed out, it’s as if DC saw that Marvel were putting out a hero vs hero movie so they thought they should do one too. But Cap against Ironman is a completely different scenario. Plus they’ve been setting that up for ages, not pulling it out of the blue like BvsS. Haven’t seen it, will not see it. So wrong.

OMG you are so spot on Heather. I would love to see a movie starring your Super Heroes! I guess after ‘The Doctor’ (okay, yes, I am an obsessed fan) my super heroes are 1) my parents for actually being able to raise me and live to talk about it (I was a ‘difficult’ child) and 2) The Captain of my sail boat because he safely gets me where I want to go.

I love that you’re an obsessed Doctor Who fan. 🙂 Did you know that my car is called the CARDIS (it’s blue) and it has a Twelfth Doctor action figure who sits on the dashboard and a TARDIS umbrella in the boot? I’m a bit of a fan too.
Your description of why your parents are superheroes made me laugh out loud. Probably because I’m a parent and I would consider it the height of success to get my kids to adulthood alive. 😀

😀 …you are indeed a superhero. I never had kids. One reason was that I was afraid of karmic payback. Parenting takes more guts than I have. I am however a loving Aunty to many great kids. My job is to spoil them. So easy.
And your kitted out CARDIS crack me up. I don’t have many things aboard Amandla (only necessities due to lack of space) so my lone Christmas ornament is a Weeping Angel (kind of sums up the holiday season for me)

Aw, Jo, thank you. 🙂 ❤ Actually, I'm currently doing a play and I get to wear a cape. But it's more your gold-trimmed velvet type than superhero material. 😉
