NEWSFLASH: MASTER OF SOMETHING I’M YET TO DISCOVER WILL GO OFF THE AIR FOR FOUR WEEKS
The MOSY Network apologises for this break in transmission. We will resume regular broadcasting at the end of November. In the meantime, reruns are available via our Blog-Post-On-Demand service. (The BPOD service can be accessed via the ‘The Old Trades’ dropdown box.)
The Background Story
In the wee hours of Saturday morning, I will board a Flying Metal Bird for parts unknown. Well, unknown to me. I’ll be gone four weeks – three in Nepal and one in Bhutan.
I will not be gracing the blogosphere for much of the journey (if at all). For the ten days I will spend in the village of Lura followed by the six days of trekking in the Lower Solukhumbu region, I anticipate a lack of access to electricity. Forget about internet. The week in Bhutan will be on a more civilised standing (in that I’ll be sleeping in a bed rather than on the ground and the toilet won’t be a hole in the ground) but I suspect I will have better things to do with my time than surf the WordPress wave (no offence).
Lura, Nepal
Here’s where I’ll be working for ten days with nine others from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to help rebuild the village school:
(All images courtesy of World Expeditions)
The school has been demolished and work has begun on the new building. The first group from World Expeditions has already started on the foundations and we will pick up where they leave off and groups will come after us to continue the work until it is done.
Bhutan
Bhutan? Well, that’s just for me. It’s been top of my bucket list for years so when The Husband told me to take more time if there was something else I wanted to do while I was in the area, I took him seriously. Called “The Essence of Bhutan” this private tour will be just a taste of this fascinating country. It’s not private by choice but no one else booked for that date. I will have my own one-on-one guide and driver for the eight days I am there. Introvert Me is hunched in the corner breathing into a paper bag.
*******
I am nervously excited for the adventure ahead. Traveller Me can’t wait to get there but Shy Me – whom I usually manage to keep busy in the kitchen during parties – keeps sticking her head out the door with questions like, “What if they don’t like you?”. I’m trying to ignore her.
See you all on the other side.
NOTE: If you can’t wait four weeks, fairly regular updates on the project are available here. You might even be able to spot me in a photograph if you’re really lucky.
Now I know what you meant in your comment the other day, “….when I get back I’m going to…” I was going to ask, but didn’t want to pry! Reading that first sentence up there, I was going to comment, “NOOOOOOOOOoooooooo! This can’t happen!” But in reading a bit further, how could I complain…..at least we’re losing you to a good cause! Most impressive! I think you’re probably going to discover a new YOU on this journey……I can’t wait to hear about her!

You know I love an overly dramatic title. 😉
You could have asked, I wouldn’t have minded but I understand where you’re coming from because I’m exactly the same. Always want to ask but never sure if it would be seen as prying.
I promise a full story when I get back including the discovery of any new Mes. 🙂

Great! Looks and sounds like very satisfying work. And the personal tour? Pretty cool. Have a great time!

Thanks. 🙂
I’ve never done a personal tour. I’m interested to see how it pans out. Mind you, after sharing a tent with a total stranger for 16 days, I may be grateful for some time to myself. 😉

I am so excited for you … and yes, more than a little bit jealous 😉 This has all the makings of an adventure that will change you in ways you can’t begin to imagine.
Have an amazing time – I know you will put your heart and soul into this project. And assure your inner voice that everyone will LOVE you …. because we all do and we know about these things ❤

I’m excited and nervous and scared and happy and underlying it all is some measure of disbelief that it is happening.
I will try and remember that. I guess as long as my tent-mate likes me……..

.Of course she will … if she has any amount of good taste 😉

Good Luck am sure that you will have a whale of a time. I am doing the same thing at the end of November for 4 weeks in Nepal and helping to build a school as well. Can’t wait to get there.

What an adventure and good for you for going so far outside your comfort zone – in many ways!

Oh, waaaaay outside my comfort zone and in sooooo many ways. But I’ve pushed myself outside that zone often enough to know that it’s always worth it. 🙂

Thank you! I’ll be sure to give a full report. Not as good as yours but in my own inimitably weird way, no doubt. 🙂

Thank you, Cynthia. And, given the terrain, may we add that the road will rise to meet me?

Nemo’s dad (Marlin) would say, “Now, go have an adventure!”
I would say, “It isn’t about whether they will like you, it is whether you will like them!”
Have a great time!

Both very excellent pieces of advice and I will bear them in mind, Dude.

Have a wonderful time, and remember Margie’s advice (it really is a much more healthy way to interact with the world).

It’s a good bit of advice and – being someone who tends to see the best in people – a much easier way of doing things.

All the best in the coming weeks. You are doing a great job. Don’t worry about blogging. We will think of you instead.

Have an amazing time both in Nepal and Bhutan. Just pray that your tent companion doesn’t have smelly feet or snore. Just saying…. (pack earplugs and air freshener)

Ear plugs – check. With us all restricted to a small bowl of water each to wash each day, I’m not judgemental about smell.
Thanks, Jude. 🙂

You are a good egg, Miss Heather. And so are the others helping to rebuild the school. Behave, be safe, and hammer away. I’m looking forward to the stories when you get back.

Thanks, Miss Mary. Can’t promise on the good behaviour but I’ll do my best.

Happy and safe travels. It sounds like you will have your hands full rebuilding the village schools. From the looks of it, a lot needs to be done but with a team that you have, I’m sure you will all rise to the challenge. Looks like you’ll get to know different parts of the building process and all the materials that go into making a school for the village and children. Exciting.
Bhutan sounds like a treat. Such luck to have the tour guide and driver all to yourself. They’ll be waiting on your on hand and foot 😀 Usually when I go to someplace new and have a driver drive me around (like when I was in Indonesia), I tip them at the end of the day.

Thanks, Mabel. We’re there in the early stages of building so I’m not sure how much we’ll get to do but I’m looking forward to seeing it take shape in whatever way.
The advice is to tip at the end of the trip based on a recommended daily amount. Got all that factored into the $$$. 🙂

I’ll throw a party for you when you get back! It’s a surprise party, so don’t tell anyone, OK?

Only if you bring the supplies for the party, like stories from your trip, good coffee, and other souvenirs, then we’ll have a party!
Also, people tell me the party don’t start until I walk in! Haha

A great and fulfilling project. Bhutan too, what an adventure. My daughter went solo with a guide (in Nepal) and really enjoyed it. Have fun!
