One of my fondest and strongest childhood memories of Christmas involves not a man in a red suit, a Christmas tree and presents but a green frog, a determined pig and a country lad in glasses.
My favourite Christmas album was (and still is) John Denver and The Muppets: A Christmas Together. It’s how I learned the story of Silent Night, it’s why I can never sing the ‘figgy pudding’ verse of We Wish You A Merry Christmas without the urge to start yelling “Won’t go!!” and it’s why whenever I sing The Twelve Days of Christmas and get to Five Gold Rings, I have to stop myself from adding “Ba Dum Bom Bom”.
My favourite song, though, isΒ It’s In Every One Of Us. I’m not sure if I understood the words when I was ten, but it was lovely to sing. It’s still lovely to sing and now the words hold so much meaning in an adult life of searching for the right way.
It’s in every one of us
To be wise
Find your heart
Open up both your eyes
We can all know everything
Without ever knowing why
It’s in every one of us
By and by
It’s good to be reminded to look inside myself for the answers I seek.
Wishing you peace, joy, hope and love in the Christmas season.

What’s Christmas without the Muppets? (As my friend M-J over at Mary J Melange reminded me recently.) I posted this for Christmas two years ago in the days when almost no one was reading my blog. At M-J’s suggestion, I’m giving it another run.
Have a Muppety Christmas everyone!

Since the muppets are “after” my time, I’m not likely to have a muppety christmas…but I do love John Denver In so many of his other songs. Have a happy christmas, MoSY, muppety or not! π

It’s never really too late nor are you ever really too old for the Muppets. In my humble opinion, of course.
Thank you, Cynthia. And to you. π

Now MoSY, I’m not too old for the muppets, simply too mature!

Cynthia, The Muppet Christmas Carol is one of the best Christmas films ever made. It stars Michael Caine, and he is perfect in it. It is serious where it should be, very funny where it should be, and remarkably touching. The musical numbers are excellent: Actually melodious, to the point where you catch yourself singing them afterward. The lyrics are intelligent, touching or witty–and well-enunciated! I cannot say definitely you would enjoy the film–I have a childlike personality, and enjoy many things other adults do not–but you might give it a whirl sometime. Here is a sample:

What can I say? I’m trying and trying to avoid saying that I really don’t like the muppets. (Oh my God…sacrilege!)….. but now I’ve said it.

But- but- Did you WATCH that clip?!?
Sigh… There’s no helping some people. My own sister Meg despises all forms of jazz.

Yes, I watched it . You’re right about the music and Michael Caine, and of course the story is a deathless classic….but I still CAN’T STAND THE MUPPETS!

You’re permitted. I still like and admire you, despite your occasional faults.
Now, back to Alistair Simtown with you.

In the spirit of Christmas and peace and goodwill, I accept your radical and alternative view of this particular group of humanity. We must accept our differences and learn to get along. Mah NΓ Mah NΓ

Now I’m giggling, MoSy….and here I thought that group of “humanity” was puppets! I guess some things just aren’t “in every one of us.” Still, the best things are…. like open eyes and a good heart…especially among friends. π

I respect Cynthia’s honest appraisal of the Muppets, but I must admit I love this movie too. I’ve always liked the Muppets in any case, but I found this particular story a great one to watch with my kids at Christmas. It was also one that had a couple of sly jokes in it that children would probably miss. Oh, and I also love the way the Gonzo and Rizzo break the fourth wall to such good comic effect. As for Michael Caine’s singing… er, well I didn’t claim it was a perfect movie.

I also enjoyed watching it with my children, and they with me. Gonzo is an acting genius. Caine sings the way one imagines Scrooge would. It may even be why he was cast. That and his perfect pasty complexion–also appropriate to the character. As long as one can forget Alfie during the big love scene–so awkward, were his eyes to stray at that moment–I find him convincing in the part.

I like Gonzo too. If I were a muppet, I’d probably be two parts Kermit, two parts Fozzie and one part Gonzo.
I agree with you about Michael Caine being well cast. He’s a very good actor. (I guess he should be after all the experience he’s had.) Perhaps that’s why he can even be convincing acting alongside a bunch of puppets.

The muppets only came into our lives when our daughters were small, and I often missed much of their shows, as I was cooking or whatever mums do, while their kids are safe and happy. They became part of our childhood language and ways of explaining emotions when words failed. Lovely memory, thanks. Happy Muppet Christmas.

I can’t believe you’ve never seen a Muppet Christmas. You must watch A Muppet Christmas Carol one day at the very least. And I love this whole album. Just been listening to it in the car on the way to and from my in-laws for Christmas Eve dinner. I am glad you will have muppety thoughts all day. What an excellent state of affairs. It beats obsessing about the eggnog.

“Obsessing over eggnog”? I think not. I don’t like it and I think the last time I actually bought any, my boys were very, very small.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I have enough leftovers to feed us for a while … and that’s AFTER creating “goodie-bags” for the guys to take home with them.
All that food is a bit shameful. Strangely, I don’t feel bad about it though π

I’m just the right age to remember the Muppets from their TV show days, so I can truthfully claim to be a lifelong fan. I’ve watched some of their recent movies with my kids, though, and was shocked to find that whereas I have aged and grown, they look exactly the same. Far be it from me to start spreading unsubstantiated rumors, but I can’t help wondering if some kind of surgery may have been involved. Either that, or they’ve switched a couple of Muppets when nobody was looking.

We were watching the new tv series last night and they’re still funny. Although, I’m struggling with the full body views of Fozzie, etc and the ‘outside the theatre’ personal life elements. It feels weird. Because, obviously, like all movie/tv stars, I assumed they had no home life and lived at the theatre (or tv studio as the case may be now).
By the way, in light of your recent post, you may be interested to know that when I first posted this, I’d been blogging for 6 months and it garnered 14 views, 1 like and no comments.

I know our tastes can sometimes change as we get older, but when it comes to the Muppets, I feel much the same way about them as I always did. I simply find them funny, even Fozzie.
I’m glad that you recycled the post, by the way. I guess I should really try thinking of my own earlier posts as a kind of reserve library that I can dip into from time to time as the need arises. I can see them coming in very handy once in a while.
